Whenever we go out to eat at a nice restaurant, my husband and son seem to look forward to chowing down on the bread that comes before the meal even more than they do the meal itself. This morning I decided to surprise them by making some french bread from scratch just for them. I don’t have much experience making bread without a bread machine, but decided this recipe looked easy enough that I should try.
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
4 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons canola oil
6 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook, pour in the water and stir the sugar into it. Add the yeast and allow to soften for about 5 minutes.
Add in the salt, oil, and half the flour. Mix, then add the rest of the flour. Turn on the mixer and mix for about a minute, until dough forms. Turn it off, leaving the dough hook in the dough. Let rest for 10 minutes, then mix down again. Repeat this until you have mixed dough down a total of 5 times.
Flour a clean surface, then remove the dough from the bowl and knead on floured surface just a few times. Break the dough in half, and roll out each half into a rectangle approximately 9 X 13 inches. Then, roll the dough up from the long side. Pinch to seal the edges. Lay the loaves on a greased baking sheet. Cover with a towel, and set in a warm spot to rise for 30 minutes.
Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.
Notes
This really was a very easy recipe. It’s a little time consuming with waiting all those 10 minute intervals, but the bread turned out so soft and tasty, and both my husband and son were thrilled.
